Skate in the Park at Dark

Feb 14, 2009 to Feb 15, 2009
Location: London ON

Skate in the Park at Dark took place on a lovely Valentine’s Day evening with 70 people attending the opening ceremonies to enjoy opening remarks made by London Chapter President, Gillian Mandich, and long-time Sunshine supporter and MP for London West, Ed Holder.

Sunshine Bear and Storybook's Slippery the Seal were highlights of the event for the younger children, and all present were amazed by watching the skill and ease with which a couple of London Blizzard Sledge Hockey players glided over the ice.

Skaters made their way around the enchanting trail throughout the night, with five particularly dedicated skaters completing the entire 12 hours – a team of four and an individual who skated 400 laps of the 250 metre trail, a total of 100 km!

Thank you to Storybook Gardens and Manager, John Riddell, for providing such a fantastic venue and a supportive staff.  As well as a special thanks to the participants, the volunteers, and all who came out to make this all-night skate-a-thon a success!

All-night Skate-a-thon makes dreams come true for Sunshine kids!

Presented by the London Chapter, Sunshine Foundation of Canada

Saturday, February 14, 8 pm (ceremonial first lap) to Sunday, February 15, 8 am (estimated end time)

Storybook Gardens, London ON

Hot chocolate, coffee and food will be available. Individual and team prizes awarded for top pledges.

This event originated in Brampton 13 years ago with skaters completing 1,000 laps of Gage Park – the equivalent of skating from Brampton to Montreal! Now this icy undertaking has come to London for a second year, at the outdoor skating
facility at London's Storybook Gardens.

Objective:  In addition to raising much-needed funds and awareness for children who are challenged by severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses, the ultimate goal for Skate in the Park at Dark is to grow the event and attract enough skaters from their respective communities to skate a distance equivalent to skating across Canada!

Participants do not need to skate for the entire 12 hours; any amount of time they skate will bring Sunshine closer to its 'virtual' goal of skating across Canada.

There are currently five children in the London area who are on Sunshine's waiting list to receive a Dream. Funds raised from this icy feat will more than scratch the surface on ensuring that their dreams become a reality!
