BMO Okanagan Marathon Runners Make Sunshine Dreams Come True

Thursday, October 6, 2016

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada is honored to once again be a charity partner with the BMO Okanagan Marathon taking place this Thanksgiving weekend, October 8th and 9th, at City Park in Kelowna.  BMO Financial Group and the Running Room have invited runners and walkers to collect pledges to support Sunshine in their mission to make dreams come true for Canadian children living with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses.

Since 1998, BMO Financial Group in Kelowna has contributed over $370,000 to support Sunshine’s Dream Programs through employee events, the BMO Okanagan Marathon, and the annual BMO Shred-a-thon which invites the public to bring their confidential documents for free professional shredding by Iron Mountain for a charitable donation of any amount.  The 8th annual BMO Shred-a-thon held September 17 raised $5,846 which will be presented by BMO to Sunshine on Saturday, October 8th at 1:15pm.

“For nearly a decade, we’ve been pleased to stand behind The Sunshine Foundation of Canada and its initiatives that provide a platform for kids to strengthen their independence and Dream Big,” said John Duff, Regional Vice-President, Personal Banking, South Interior B.C., BMO Bank of Montreal. “The runners’ support of the 22nd annual BMO Okanagan Marathon is encouraging, and with such a large quantity of runners registered – including our employees – we expect to make a significant contribution to helping Sunshine Kid – those both here in British Columbia and from coast-to-coast – attain their dreams.”

Onsite to cheer on the runners and walkers will be 18-year-old Hannah from Penticton, BC, who thanks to caring supporters like BMO Financial Group, the Running Room and all the event participants and supporters, recently received her Sunshine Dream come true of a brand new hand cycle. Hannah’s Sunshine Dream allows her to ride with friends and family unassisted and unencumbered by her spina bifida.  Joining Hannah will be the always popular Sunshine Bear mascot for meet and greet and photo opportunities with kids of all ages.

Tim Hortons returns with their mobile café and Coffee for Communities program. Tim Hortons will generously donate proceeds from coffee sales from the mobile café to The Sunshine Foundation.

“The BMO Okanagan Marathon is a truly awe inspiring event,” says Nancy Sutherland, CEO for The Sunshine Foundation of Canada.  “We are grateful to BMO Financial Group and the Running Room for their commitment to Sunshine Dreams and giving us the opportunity, as their charity partner, to engage with their marathon family of runners, walkers, and supporters.  It is because of community-minded business supporters like BMO Financial Group, the Running Room, and Tim Hortons, that we can fulfill more dreams for children coast to coast.”

The Okanagan Family Festival Weekend includes:

  • 42.2km BMO Marathon Run/Walk,
  • 21.1km Half Marathon Run/Walk,
  • 10km Run/Walk,
  • 5km Fun Run/Walk, and

These events will once again take participants on a route along Kelowna’s beautiful Okanagan Lake waterfront. This Event draws national attention as a certified Boston Marathon Qualifier for 2017.
