Call for Nominations - Sunshine Board of Directors

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada has been working with youth across Canada for over 30 years.  Serving individuals aged 7-18 with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses, Sunshine’s two programs are designed to provide transformative experiences that result in a lifelong change in perspective and fuel the discovery of a brighter future story.  Sunshine is entirely community funded (no government funds or tax dollars are received) and works with people and companies across Canada to support its work.

Time Commitment

Approximately three hours a month (board or committee meetings, preparing for meetings, attending special events)

Term of Office

Three year term, renewable once


Board members are responsible for acting in the best long-term interests of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the community and will bring to the task of informed decision-making a broad knowledge and an inclusive perspective.

Principle Duties

Every member of the Board of Directors, including the Board’s officers, is expected to do the following:

  • Prepare for and participate in board meetings (in person or via video/conference call)
  • Listen to others’ views, advocate their own, identify common interests and alternatives, and be open to compromise
  • Support governance decisions once made
  • Participate in the review of Sunshine’s mission and objectives and in the development of a strategic plan
  • Help the board to monitor the performance of Sunshine in relation to its mission, objectives, core values and reputation
  • Abide by the by-laws, code of conduct, conflict of interest and other polices that apply to the board
  • Participate in the approval of the annual budget and monitor the financial performance of Sunshine in relation to it
  • Participate in the hiring of, and if required, the releasing of, the CEO
  • Participate in the evaluation of the CEO
  • Identify prospective board members and possibly help recruit them
  • Participate in the evaluation of the board itself (annual board self-evaluation)
  • Contribute to the work of board as a member of a board committee
  • Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting and Strategy Session (London ON)
  • Support Sunshine and its activities through a personal annual donation
  • Be an ambassador for Sunshine – ensure ones involvement is known within their own network of friends and contacts.
  • Keep informed about community issues relevant to the mission and objectives of Sunshine


The following are considered key qualifications:

  • Prior experience on a charitable board
  • Formal governance and board training
  • Experience in philanthropy
  • Commitment to Sunshine’s mission and strategic directions
  • A commitment of time
  • Openness to learning
