Wednesday, June 24, 2015

June 25, 2015 has been officially proclaimed the day for staff with the City of Brantford to wear a specially designed t-shirt sold in support of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada.

Brantford Staff TShirtThe City of Brantford Staff Challenge is a t-shirt sales campaign and Commission challenge created and organized by dedicated volunteers from the Brantford Fire Department engaging the various Commissions of the City of Brantford.  Each Commission competed for the bragging rights to be the champion of t-shirt sales based on per capital sales.

The Challenge culminated with a public celebration in Harmony Square on June 25th from 11:30am to 2:00pm with food, entertainment, presentation of funds raised to The Sunshine Foundation of Canada, and the awards presentation of the 2015 City of Brantford Staff Challenge Trophy. The celebration was open to the public and made possible by the generosity of caring sponsors and the City of Brantford. Funds raised support the Sunshine DreamLift Brantford 2017 planned for children living with severe disabilities or life threatening illnesses in Brantford and surrounding regions. The Sunshine DreamLift is a whirlwind one-day ‘day of yes’ adventure to a Disney theme park coordinated by The Sunshine Foundation of Canada for 70-75 children and supported by a dedicated team of medical volunteers.

“Please join us on Thursday June 25 at Harmony Square Brantford, from 11:30-2pm for a fundraising BBQ in support of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada.” invites Aaron Barker, Co-Chair, Organizing Committee, The City of Brantford Staff Challenge, Brantford Fire Department.  “We will have food from Strodes and Kettle Corn, Live Music hot off the WTFest Stage, Brantford's own "Peeler", Campbell Amusements with "Whack-a-Mole", Displays from Arts and Culture, Local Personalities and more. All money raised goes directly to The Sunshine Foundation of Canada.”

Another special moment was hearing 18 year old Nathan Manners' mom speak with Nathan by her side. Nathan lives in Brantford and had the awesome opportunity to go on the Brantford 2014 Sunshine DreamLift to Disney World.  He was also a recent recipient of an individual dream to receive a Recumbent Tandem Bike. Nathan shared his thoughts on the impact these dreams had on his life. Nathan also presented his own cheque to The Sunshine Foundation of Canada from his fundraising garage sale (complete with a fry truck) to pay-it-forward to help fulfill dreams for other Sunshine Children.

"We are pleased to participate in the 2015 City of Brantford Staff Challenge to support the great work of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada,” said Mayor Chris Friel. “We're proud to partner with an organization that makes such a tremendous impact on the lives of deserving children. City staff embraced the challenge and enjoyed the spirited competition between Commissions."

“We are thrilled to have this fundraising effort and celebration dedicated to building greater awareness for The Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the inspiring children we serve each and every day from coast to coast with our Sunshine Dreams for Kids Programs,” shared Nancy Sutherland, CEO, The Sunshine Foundation of Canada. “We are grateful to Aaron Barker, Pat Vincze and Janice Blaj for their volunteer leadership in coordinating this incredible fundraising drive to support Sunshine, and to all participants for their enthusiastic spirit to get involved. The funds raised will directly support our Sunshine DreamLift Program return to Brantford in 2017.”

2015 marked the inaugural year for The City of Brantford Staff Challenge - created to be an annual event to bring municipal staff together to support a worthwhile cause that positively impacts the lives of children in the Brantford region and across Canada.
