Daniel's Bahamas Dream
Fifteen year old Daniel from Maple Ridge BC celebrated his Sunshine Dream this past winter in conjunction with his birthday. His dream was for an exciting adventure to Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas.
Well-wishers from WINNERS HomeSense celebrated a ‘Bon Voyage’ for Daniel at an in-store Dream Presentation. His big smile was contagious from the moment he walked in; greeting Sunshine Bear, an RCMP officer, store associates and volunteers.
Daniel lives with chronic kidney disease and a chromosome abnormality. He has limited verbal skills but those who meet him love his energetic, full of life attitude. His goal on this trip was to relax, swim in the shallow waters with dolphins, and enjoy the thrills of the water slides with his parents and older brother Jeremy.
The mid-February weather during his Sunshine Dream trip was described as the perfect temperature. Calm waves of the crystal clear blue water lightly brushed the shore as the family walked around the marina admiring big yachts, eating ice cream and listening to a man play drums. Daniel’s favourite memories were a mix of excitement and relaxation.
“I went on as many waterslides as I could. I loved the speed and the tunnels. And swimming with the dolphins was the best experience ever. I loved the way they moved and talked to me. It was very relaxing.”
After returning from his trip, Daniel shares his experience with everyone he meets, especially since many recognize him from the local newspaper report about his Sunshine Dream.
“The Sunshine Foundation gives kids an opportunity to do something they dreamed about. As parents, we are fortunate to have a child that in the midst of these challenges, has inspired many people to look at life in a different set of lenses.” - Daniel’s mom, Liliana.
