The Sunshine Foundation of Canada is looking to fill two upcoming vacancies on its volunteer Board with people willing to commit to Sunshine’s mission, and provide a socially diverse and inclusive strategic direction to the organization’s goals. Board members are responsible for acting in the best long-term interests of The Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the community, and will bring to the task of informed decision-making a broad knowledge and an inclusive perspective.

About Sunshine Foundation of Canada

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada has been working with youth across Canada for over 30 years. Serving individuals aged 7-18 with severe physical disabilities, Sunshine’s two programs are designed to provide transformative experiences that result in a lifelong change in perspective and fuel the discovery of a brighter future story. Sunshine is entirely community funded (no government funds or tax dollars are received) and works with people and companies across Canada to support its work.

Time Commitment

Approximately three hours a month (board or committee meetings, preparing for meetings, attending special events) for a three year term, renewable once.

Principle Duties

  • Prepare for and participate in board meetings (in person or via video/conference call)
  • Participate in the review of Sunshine’s mission and objectives and in the development of a strategic plan
  • Abide by the by-laws, code of conduct, conflict of interest and other polices that apply to the board
  • Participate in the approval the annual budget and monitor the financial performance of Sunshine in relation to it
  • Participate in the management of the President and CEO
  • Identify prospective board and committee members
  • Participate in the evaluation of the board itself (annual board self-evaluation)
  • Contribute to the work of board as a member of a board committee
  • Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting and Strategy Session (London ON)
  • Support Sunshine and its activities through a personal annual donation
  • Be an ambassador for Sunshine – ensure ones involvement is known within their own network of friends and contacts.
  • Keep informed about community issues relevant to the mission and objectives of Sunshine

Must-Have Qualifications

  • A commitment of time
  • Openness to learning
  • Prior experience on a charitable board is an asset
  • Formal governance and board training preferred
  • Experience in personal philanthropy and activation with others preferred
